Garage Door This Winter

Your garage door is the ultimate luxury throughout the winter months so it’s important that it is protected in the cold weather. Unfortunately, freezing conditions can leave your automatic door stuck and susceptible to a variety of common issues:

Frozen Door

On particularly cold days, you may experience a garage door that is frozen closed. First, try to manually open the door using the emergency release cord. If this doesn’t work, you will need to identify where the ice is that is preventing your door from opening- whether it be that your door’s panels are frozen together or that the door is frozen to the ground. If the panels of your door are frozen together, you can slowly melt the ice with a hair dryer. However, be careful as applying too much heat in one spot for too long may damage the weather seal or door finish. If the door is frozen to the ground – start by scraping away any snow or ice on the outside of the door. You can then use a hair dryer to melt away any excess ice. Be sure to dry any water once melted to ensure it does not refreeze.

Contracting Metal

As temperatures drop, the metal in your garage door will contract. Due to the metal parts throughout the door tightening, movement becomes more difficult and can potentially cause bending in the tracks. While you cannot prevent metal from contracting, you can alleviate severe issues by ensuring that your door is well lubricated and properly maintained.

The best way to troubleshoot common winter issues with your garage door is by lifting it manually. You can typically identify the problem depending on how your door lifts. If your door is heavy, you may need to replace your springs which also wear over time. If your door is sticking at certain spots, it’s likely that your door needs lubrication.

Preventative Maintenance:

It’s imperative that you do annual routine maintenance on your garage door to ensure that you keep your door running smoothly year-round. Not only will this keep your door in like-new condition, but it also allows a garage door expert to identify issues that may develop. We offer an annual garage door tune-up where we will:

  • inspect and adjust your springs
  • check the balance of your doors, opener limits, force, and gears
  • lubricate your doors, hinges, rollers, and opener
